HISTORY

History:
Friese witjes’ have been made in Friesland, Holland since 1600.
We still use the same materials.
The tiles are finished with the same tin glaze and painted with the same images of hundreds of years ago.
This makes the Friese witjes so desirable in Holland but also in other countries around us these days.

Clay
Just like hundreds of years ago the wet clay is cut in thin slices and dried on wooden shelves. The handcraft and nature create the atmosphere that makes our tiles look old.

Kilns
In our gas Kilns the clay is baked as Bisqui, then the tiles are glazed and baked again on 1.100 degrees.

Glaze:
White tin has especially been used since 1600 specially in the Northern part of Holland to give it that different look. A beautiful specific luster in more than twenty shades of white.

Did you know that. . ,
There is only one place in the kiln where the conditions are good enough to bake the hand painted tiles? it's the center, where the tiles are surrounded by the unpainted ones.

Paintings
Our five painters are specialized in the art of the majolica technique. Every painter has his or her own style. They have copied the this technique from the 17th century. We have many original old painting wich we use for study material

The tiles are 13x13 cm. and 7 mm. thick, it takes 60 pieces per square meter.
