In Friesland, the first tile factories started up in the late 1500s, which is why these white tiles are called 'Frisian whites'. The fishing boats bringing their cargo of fish into Harlingen harbour took the tiles with them and on their way home they sold them all along the European coast.
What exactly is a Frisian white?
A Frisian white tile is a white tile made of fresh clay with tin glaze applied to it. It was quite difficult to produce the same white colour every time, which is why you see different shades of white on one wall in old houses where Frisian whites have been used.
